The Magic in Writing Letters

We’re sheltering in place another month and who knows how much longer.  And each of us is finding our own Magic in the Mundane. Please tell me your stories and keep me posted on how you’re making magic.  In my book, I write about the magic of writing letters and in the mailbox last week I found this letter from our grandson Grant who is 11.  Grant illustrated the book with me last summer. How prescient that book has become.  Not only was it magical to collaborate with him but to get his letter the other day, wax seal and all.

Grant taught himself cursive because they don’t teach that in California schools anymore.  It’s a tragedy but I’ll save that for another day.  He not only has better handwriting than most adults I know, but he also taught himself calligraphy.  I saw the envelope and wondered who wrote? Saw the wax seal and realized it was him.  And this magic unfolded, quite literally.

Grant is home with his Mom an exec at Verizon Media, his Dad who is minding the home and is my hero in every way, and his 2-year-old sister. They are under one roof waiting it out and he’s keeping himself productive with distance learning and letters to YiaYia. I’ll take them.

I sat down Sunday, one week later, pulled out my stationery and one of my favorite pens and wrote back.  I licked the envelope, sealed it with my own wax seal, addressed it slowly, and posted the stamp.

He’s getting his return message sometime today – Wednesday.  Life is slower, simpler, but richer and deeper.  Texts often get it done. But when we need magic – a handwritten letter – works every time.
